Plantar Fasciitis & Heel Pain Treatment

Pain in the plantar heel or arch pain, specifically after periods of rest or at the start of the day when you first get out of bed may indicate that you have plantar fasciitis. It is a very common condition and should never be left to heal on its own, otherwise you increase risk of immobility and severe pain during weight-bearing.

“Plantar” means the bottom of the foot, “fascia” is the thick tissue connecting the heel to the toes and “itis” means inflammation of. .

Common causes of plantar fasciitis include excessive stretch on the plantar fascia due to biomechanical abnormalities (flat feet, high arch feet etc), tight muscles in the leg and foot, inappropriate footwear and/or inappropriate activity. Extrinsic factors such as long periods of standing, sudden increases in activity intensity and inappropriate footwear cause the plantar fascia to become overloaded and therefore resulting in pain and stiffness.

Podiatrists can diagnose plantar fasciitis and assist you with multiple treatment options such as dry needling, taping, footwear advice, stretching, massage, exercises and orthotics. When left untreated, heel spurs may also develop. These a small bony growths caused by the pull of the plantar fascia on the heel bone.
